International Student Symposium

Western Balkans Interwar Music and its European context

On behalf of musicology students of the Faculty of Music in Belgrade, it is an honor to invite you to participate in a set of music in the Western Balkans and its European context. The symposium will be held in Belgrade, from 8 to 9 December 2008. Theme of the meeting centered on the questions of music in the Western Balkans, but they are welcome and papers that will help to elucidate its European context. The set is limited to students in musicology, but is open to all students who are engaged in the practice of music and the role of music in culture. The official languages of the symposium will be BCS (Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian) and English.

symposium will be held during the Days of music in the Western Balkans, and the participants will have the opportunity to attend concerts reconstructions that were held Belgrade 1926th and 1936, partly based on unpublished material and archival research.

interwar period is a very prolific time in the history of music when many musical styles and cultures developed and coexisted. As the Western Balkans at the time was incorporated into the framework of one country (the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, that is. The Kingdom of Yugoslavia) and influenced by European trends, the study of music in social context without the prospect of overcoming the national scientific discourse has proven impossible. In addition, this theme, shared by students throughout the Western Balkans, can be an appropriate starting point for further continuous communication and exchange of knowledge.

structure of the symposium will include two types of presentation: the standard papers and panel discussions. Papers can be read in B / C and in English. Each participant will have 20 minutes for the paper, after which will follow the discussion of 10 minutes. As the issues we are especially indicative:

- The discourse on music in the interwar period
questions of musicological and ethnomusicological, and discourse of music criticism and other discourses on music. The reception of music.

- Music and Musical Institutions

panel discussions will be organized on the predetermined subjects, in one of two official languages of the symposium. Each participant will have 50-10 minutes for presentations after which will be followed by discussions led by the moderator. The round tables may participate as students who exhibit the work, and those who are not exposed to one participant can participate in several round tables.
